In the wake of the early 1990s resurgence in popularity of kung fu films, and those featuring Wong Fei Hung in particular, Jackie returned to the genre (and the character) where his fame began sixteen years earlier.

Chan's final duel with real-life bodyguard Ken Lo, a last minute replacement for an injured Ho-Sung Pak, took nearly 4 months to complete.

Jackie famously clashed with veteran director Lau Kar-Leung over the style of fight choreography (with Chan wanting more drunken boxing and less wirework) so much so that Chan dismissed Lau and completed the film on his own.  Despite these on-set tensions the film became a huge success when released for Lunar New Year 1994.  Time magazine ranked it among the top 100 films of all time.

What makes our version special:

Famously unavailable in it's original uncut version and aspect ratio for many years since it's original release, finally a new high definition scan of the uncut original was made available in Hong Kong and Japanese markets.

Our release is the only one in English-speaking markets to contain this new, uncut high definition transfer.

In comparison to the more commonly available Miramax release that was re-titled "Legend of Drunken Master", this transfer is sharper and wider, showing more information in the frame on either side of the image.  Furthermore, the original opening titles are intact, and even the often-deleted ending "blind boxing" scene.  Lastly, the colors are bolder, less washed-out and far more accurate to the original theatrical presentation.

The subtitles:

We spent considerable time re-translating the dialogue line-by-line to produce an exclusive subtitle track that, for the first time ever, properly conveys the story line and acting performances of this classic film to an English audience.

It is no exaggeration to say that there exists no other release in the world with decent English subtitles.

But we went a step further and had the Drunken Master 2 theme song that plays over the ending credits / outtakes translated into English for the very first time.

A carefully-selected collection of audio tracks:

Our release includes a more comprehensive audio selection than any other.

Finally, you have the option to toggle between every audio track that you’d want for this film, including a commentary track by Bey Logan.
