#1. Hard Boiled HKR Definitive Edition Blu-ray

100% Money Back Guarantee (See Our Policy)

Hard Boiled is John Woo’s “last hurrah” to the Hong Kong movie scene, a triumphant crescendo to his series of gangster melodramas, before emigrating to the U.S. for a new career in Hollywood.

After a string of popular films glamorizing hitmen and moral gangsters, Woo turned his sights on the police.  “King of Cool” Chow Yun-Fat plays plainclothesman “Tequila” Yuen, a toothpick chewing cop who makes destroying a ring of gun-smuggling thugs a personal matter.  Standing in his way is Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, delivering a powerfully nuanced performance.  But “Tony” is also a cop, buried so deep undercover no one is sure where his allegiances lie.  And in typical John Woo fashion, it’s all going to explode in an epic, over-the-top, balls-to-the-wall, no-time-to-reload climax that’s sure to satisfy even the most jaded action fan.

What makes our version special:

As most John Woo fans know, finding a decent release of this film over the years has been an exercise in futility.  Either the transfer was a shoddy upscale that looks no better than a DVD release from twenty years ago, or the subtitles were actually “dubtitles” rife with spelling errors, or the original mono audio track was absent, replaced with awful surround “remixes”.  In reality, most versions probably contain a combination of these defects leaving John Woo fans in despair over ever seeing a decent release.

Little known to most people, a couple of years ago there was an obscure Japanese release of this film that featured a true high definition transfer that far exceeded any other release anywhere in the world in terms of picture quality.  It lacked English subtitles so It has remained unknown in the English-speaking world.

Our release uses this exact same source, except with the addition of new color grading for an even more accurate picture.  You won’t find better picture quality for this film anywhere in the world.  Guaranteed.

The subtitles have been completely rewritten by someone who is fluent in Cantonese.  These subtitles have been scrutinized, tweaked and improved over multiple revisions by our community of die-hard fans who love this film far more than the American studios who attempt to cash in on Hong Kong film classics to make a quick buck.

The result is the most accurate English subtitles ever that properly convey the finely nuanced performances to an English-speaking audience for the first time.

You’ve never experienced this film until you’ve experienced it with a proper English translation.
